  • Coping with Stress

  • Chandra Sandoval

Work. School. Family. Life can be stressful. Your physical health is just as an important as your mental health. We encourage you to take care of your body inside and out!

Here are a few suggestions from The Huffington Post to help you de-stress:

    • Go for a ten minute walk. It will help clear your head and boost endorphins which will lower your stress hormones.
    • Take deep breaths. It will reduce tension and helping you calm down.
    • Listen to music. Classical music has been known to slow the heart rate but any music you enjoy will increase feel-good neurochemicals like dopamine.
    • Chew a piece of gum. It can relieve anxiety and improve alertness.
    • Have a snack high in potassium like bananas, yogurt, or avocados. It will lower your blood pressure.
    • Look away from the screens. Practice the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes working on your computer, phone, or tablet look away and focus on a spot 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

If your stress is higher than you can cope or you are experiencing a crisis, help is available. You can text “741741” to chat with counselor if you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or just need someone to talk to. This service is free (data messaging rates may apply).
